NGC 4013 is an interesting
little edge-on galaxy that was recently the target of the Hubble Space
Telescope. The Hubble image clearly shows the dark band of overlying
molecular dust clouds that lie in the plane of this perfectly edge-on galaxy.
NGC 4013 was also described by Tom Polakis in his April 1996 Sky &
Telescope article Edge-on Galaxies of Spring.
In his article Polakis described
NGC 4013 as "Moderately faint, 4'x1.5' p.a. 135 deg., with a large bulge,
and alight central brightening." In my 18-inch f/4.5 I was struck
by the bright star near the center. This star nearly drowns out the
galaxy and I found it to be sort of distracting.
