NGC 6712
Globular Cluster
Integrated Visual Magnitude: 8.1
Apparent Diameter: 9.8'
Distance: 23,000 ly

Minimum requirements to view: any telescope under dark skies

I "discovered" this globular cluster one night while sweeping at 95x with an OIII filter in place.  It came into my view as a round glow and as I swept, another, very similar, round glow appeared in the same field (IC 1295).  The two objects made quite a pleasing and unexpected sight!

The field here is wonderfully rich, even without the globular.  The cluster itself is quite concentrated, appearing as a round, hazy patch in small instruments.  Larger telescopes will bring out more and more of the individual stars.  Try using at least 200x  on it.  Some observers have reported a distinct inner "core" concentration within the larger sphere.

A six-inch view at 50x.  North is down and east is right.
