H 3-75

Planetary Nebula
aka PN G193.6-09.5, PK 193-9.1, ARO 218
Integrated Visual Magnitude: 13.9
Apparent Diameter: 24"

Mean Surface Brightness: 20.5 mag/arc-sec2

Minimum requirements to detect: 12-inch under dark skies

Haro 3-75  is an obscure planetary nebula in Orion.  Until recently both its catalog position and magnitude have had large errors.  McNeil lists the position of H 3-75 as 05h40m44.8s +12o21'16" , which is the only reference I was able to find that lists the correct location.  I also found this object to be about one magnitude brighter than the listed photographic magnitude of 13.9, which should make it visible in telescopes as small as 12" or perhaps 10".

Although not large by any standards, I found this 24" nebula fairly easily at 80x while searching the area in my 18-inch without a filter.

The view in an 12.5-incg 66x. North is down and east is right.

This planetary was intriguing in my 18-inch f/4.5 truss Dob at 425x.  It appeared as a bright knot, or central star, surrounded by a fainter, elliptical envelope.  Although fainter, the envelope was obvious without averted vision.  It almost looked more like an elliptical galaxy with a bright core than a planetary nebula.

This DSS image displays a 3' field.  North is down and east is to the right.
